From the 2nd January 2022, we are changing the prices of our bus, tram, and train tickets in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, and South Yorkshire.
TravelMaster and its operators have worked hard to absorb the increasing cost pressures on their businesses whilst focussing on improving services for customers during the national staff shortage challenges. The January 2023 changes are now necessary to reflect the additional, above-inflation cost increases on the transport sector such as energy, vehicle parts and labour.
The money from fares goes towards paying for the day-to-day running of services as well as investing in new buses and other customer improvements.
John Henshall, General Manager of TravelMaster, announcing the decision today said:
“We are continuing to work hard to keep fares as low as possible, however, the increased costs we are all facing are putting pressure on fares.
TravelMaster tickets cover the bus, train and tram so any decision on fares is carefully considered across all modes of transport. This is not a decision which has been taken lightly and fares have continued to be supressed for as long as possible in a backdrop of previously deferred increases across our ticket range.
We understand that any fares increase at any time, especially during a ‘cost-of-living crisis’ will be unpopular, but we have worked hard to keep the increases to a minimum and below the prevailing rate of inflation. Whilst other areas of the country are able to use central government funding to support fares initiatives, these changes also reflect the fact that South Yorkshire was unsuccessful in its bid for this funding. Although other initiatives such as the Mayor’s £2 capped single fare has been able to be funded locally providing savings to passengers.
TravelMaster tickets continue to represent great value for money with unlimited travel available across multiple operators, buses, trains and trams within the region. For instance, one day CityBus, CityWide or our district Connect products offer a further saving to three capped single (Mayor’s) fares. Greater savings can also be made by buying our range of weekly (equivalent to approximately 3.5 days for 7 days travel) and longer term tickets (with even greater savings the longer validity the ticket).
We are also investing in a new retail App, working with our supplier Urban Things to improve the customer experience when buying online and we expect to deliver this in spring 2023.This is in addition to m-tickets which are available through First and Stagecoach’s own apps for Day and Flexi Tickets. Further innovations are also in the pipeline, and we look forward to announcing these in due course.”
Our tickets will continue to cost less when bought in advance via our website, Payzone, or ticket machines located at the interchanges.
